Decomposition of Price Effects

上一章說：Price effect 是指在「貨幣所得」 (money income) 不變下，價格改變所導致的需求量改變。其實 price effect 是可分割為 income effect 和 substitution effect 的。

當 money income 不變，而 Good X 的 money price 下降，將會有以下影嚮：

1. Good X 的相對價格 (relative price)下降，帶來 substitution effect。
2. 實質所得 (real income) 上升，帶來 income effect。

請看下圖：Money price of X 下降 (click the 1st button)，Budget line 由 AB 改變為 AC。A 點代表現有 money income 不變。

1. Budget line AC 變得「平」了，代表 Good X 的相對價格減少了。
2. 新的 equilibrium consumption = E2。由於 E2 的 utility 高於 E1，這代表 real income 上升了。

圖中出現的 price effect (X1 至 X2)， 其實是由上述的 (1) relative price 和 (2) real income 兩方面的改變造成的。這即是說，price effect 其實是 subsitution effect 和 income effect 的總和。
